1001 Awesome Adventure Titles
The adventurers¸ restive after weeks of enforced inactivity (and finals)¸ have gathered¸ eager to begin their next quest. In the past weeks¸ they have studied the legends that they might follow up on and the tales of lost treasure whose truth they might investigate.
Garin: I'm thinking we're going to go Into Ormin's Keep. It is famous¸ or perhaps notorious might be the best word. *and the adventure just came out last month*
Kalthros: No¸ too obvious. It will be something we don't expect. Perhaps investigating the Mysteries of Blood Tower. * That's an oldie but a goodie*
Lyry: We've been poking around castles and towers too much lately. I think our next adventure will involve the Secrets of the Twisted Swamp. *also¸ I saw our GM looking at that one in the store last week.*
Jarmak: I don't like swamps. They're for frogs.
There is a smothered giggle. Jarmak glares around the table¸ but his companions all look grim and serious.
GM: Sorry I'm late. It's been one of those days. I couldn't help overhearing your speculation. For the next few sessions¸ we'll be doing In Search of the Bronze Orc.
There is confusion and muttering around the table. What's with bronze orcs? Where does this even happen? And particularly¸ why couldn't anyone read up on this one in advance?
GM: Everybody ready? Pass me some of that pizza¸ would you¸ and let's get started.
Welcome to the "1001 Things" collections
Whether the simplest one-session modules or the most complex adventure paths¸ RPG adventures have always had interesting¸ evocative titles. They set the scene and the tone for what comes next¸ at least in the GM's head even if the players never know them. Tombs and expeditions¸ quests and castles¸ the intriguing names have become as famous as their contents. There is no reason why a custom-written adventure should have any less than a store-bought one. And for a GM staring at a blank piece of paper waiting for inspiration to strike¸ a look over a list of possible names can be exactly that inspiration.
What is The Treasure of the Hungering Geyser ? How can a spouting pool of water be hungry in the first place? And if it is¸ how does it eat? Wait for prey to fall in? Let's see¸ it's not precisely the geyser itself¸ it's a creature from the elemental plane of water that lives in it. It calls its prey with a mental lure¸ like sort of a psionic siren¸ that affects animals only nearby¸ but can be heard by intelligent beings a mile or more away. Unable to either leave its pool or return to its world¸ it keeps killing¸ and stores the treasure it gathers in one of the underwater chambers of the geyser. Adventurers will need to avoid being lured into the boiling water¸ determine what is going on¸ fight both the elemental and any creatures it has lured to guard it¸ and then locate and retrieve that treasure.
You can undoubtedly do better with that concept; that paragraph is just the result of a minute or two of throwing together some ideas the title inspired. And there are a thousand more of those¸ all ready to spark ideas for adventures of your own¸ ones that don't come off a rack in a store.
No more boring names or lack of inspiration; with 1001 Awesome Adventure Titles to choose from¸ you'll be ready to come up with something new every game!
